It starts at the top of this country. The top decides who you are, what you represent, what you believe and how you are perceived. I know because I have been there, in and out of offices in some of the biggest corporations in the world.
What do they decide? For the most part:
Hispanics clean well and make good Nannies, black people don’t eat healthy or maintain healthy habits. They also don’t save money. Indians and others of Middle Eastern background don’t believe in deodorant and smell like curry. Polish people are dumb and they all bowl. Women don’t possess the emotional stability to lead in corporate America or in Washington. There is a silent belief and effort to make sure condos, clubs and casinos stay light by not offering large enough salaries and education to the unwanted crowd. Many in this same isolated lifestyle also believe in hiring foreign home health workers, nannies and housekeepers because they believe foreigners won’t steal from them or get in their business.
I didn’t make this up. Once an image is decided upstairs at the top, everything beneath it follows suit. There are examples everywhere: the latest is the Kellogg’s Corn Pops debacle. On the back of the box everyone (for the most part) is having a great time, but the darker man wearing earphones is cleaning the floor. The creators of this ad were ok with the artwork because the image of white people having fun while darker people work was decided upstairs at the top of America a long time ago.
Remember the Verizon FIOS TV ad? (You’d have to live in a FIOS area). In this ad, interracial family members are all working on their fast speed internet. The voice over refers to the white husband by his last name and the black wife by her first name. It’s not Verizon’s fault, other than the fact that the company approved it. The lack of equal respect for the black person began upstairs at the top.
The identity of Polish people being great bowlers and people who do nothing but go bowling on off days could make people think Poland invented bowling. This is an old photo of then President Richard Nixon bowling at the White House. Nixon’s ancestors were Pennsylvania Quaker.
Just as many Americans vote without getting the complete story first, many of those same people are victims of being human. They believe what they see and that’s how we were taught. When they see a photo with all of the darker ethnic people toward the right or the back, they know those people hold less of an important role in the entire group. It’s the same brainwash that could have played out with the image of former White House Communications Director, Anthony Scaramucci. Scaramucci is a smart businessman, but the image of him that was plastered all over could have taken any viewer back to The Godfather movie.
The image insinuates: “What’s he doing inside the White House? He should be flipping’ pizzas”. Well viewers, it’s all in the staging because if you blink, you might see the same man twice here:
Actually, the man on the left is ABC’s George Stephanopolous. Below left: George with a newspaper and right: Scaramucci appearing to channel Al Capone. Is it really fair?
Now…the sad part is not that each is portrayed in the media a certain way. The unfortunate chapter is WHY they are each portrayed as they are. Media, meaning advertising, Hollywood, TV show themes, print material etc. sells what people want and what people will stop to watch. People have been socialized to believe Scaramucci looks like a thug and Stephanopoulos looks like a scholar. If that’s what you think, then I damn sure better focus on you what you want so I can sell my media.
It doesn’t stop there. Proof that the image control starts upstairs at the top could be interpreted in the commercial with Molly, the little girl genius who grows up to technologically change the world. What about telling the truth, which is that there are many children of many nationalities who have already quietly proven their genius? Why not rotate the ads? No, why bother? It would change attitudes already set about images. This control needs to stay in the palm of the hand upstairs at the top.
Not done yet. There’s a mother in New York who will always be angry about something. She took her daughter to a photographer so she could become a stock photo model. Whether or not she should be angry, given the circumstances, is a matter of opinion. The image of this little girl was chosen by the people at the top of advertising to represent an ad about African American women, abortion and unwanted pregnancies.
Don’t you believe these unfair portrayals of people will forever escape the victims. Eventually, it all comes out in the wash. Look what happened to these guys.
PLUS HARVEY WEINSTEIN ………
So how do accused sexual abusers Bill Cosby, Anthony Weiner, Donald Trump, the late Roger Ailes, Harvey Weinstein and whoever the other guy is, fit into this blog? In my opinion, each was a victim of Hollywood and the media. Don’t get me wrong. I am not justifying any of their perverse actions. However, none of the women I’ve ever known would notice these guys anywhere if the men didn’t have money and power. None of these guys would make the cut as leading men or sex symbols if they were poor. They are victims of Ethnic ID because they believed they were in the category of the species the media calls the most desired on earth, the white man. It’s flattering but to tell the truth, these perverts didn’t believe they are desirable for themselves or they wouldn’t have had to try to steal what they’d never get without the ultimate media, Hollywood.©
What’s my REAL point you ask? It is that Ethnic ID IS the root of most of our societal anxieties. Stop stereotyping & profiling people based on false information and things could look up!
