The life of a model and or actress/actor may be one of the shortest of all professional tenures. Many young people want to be models. Some make it, many don’t. Often it depends on the “look” and what look is “in” at the moment. Many young women and young men who become models want to make it their life’s mission and sometimes they can. However, the entire life’s mission doesn’t have to be spent only on the runway. Once upon a time there were some very successful models of color whose tenure ended without pomp and circumstance, compared to today’s top models. Then one day, one former top model and actress had an idea.
It was 2009 when Maria McDonald attended a reunion of fashion models in New York. The former faces of magazines shared a lot of stories. It was then that Maria suggested they open up the model reunions and become more than pretty faces and bodies making money for designers. Maria thought it was time to use their ‘VOICES’ for ‘change’. By the next reunion in 2010, the former models had created Cover Girls For Change and the Red Carpet Models Reunion and Redlight Children Charity Event. They launched it during the September NY Fashion Week with the help of Beaver Studio. The Studio collaborated with the Cover Girls to help them bring hope to a new generation, eradicate HIV/AIDS and promote global education. With the help of Dionne Warwick, Pat Cleveland, Sessilee Lopez, Nykhor Paul, Hilda Lee, Drielle Valeretto and Sandi Bass, Maria McDonald’s dream had pulled away from the gate and was on the taxiway.
Today CGFC has evolved into a fashion and philanthropy platform that connects top models and talent agencies with causes working for the common good. Cover Girls for Change organizes and implements advocacy campaigns and events, it fosters partnerships between non-profits and talent in the beauty, fashion and film industries. CGFC also advises members of the community on issues of philanthropy and social change.
If you are a model and would like to increase your exposure and post fashion life, Cover Girls For Change may be the direction to follow. The agency advises young women on how to best invest their fat, talent, time and money for social change. CGFC also helps cover girls cultivate their personal brands and plan their post-modeling legacies. The former top models help book events and other engagements for charities and social change causes.
